This is my friend Zeeshan Kahn. I worked with him back in college when quite honestly I had a pretty poor approach to photography and was always very focussed on the technical side of digital and lighting. I really liked Joey Lawrence at the time and took a lot of inspiration from his work. I’ve come to really dislike the JoeyL look nowadays. I do not deny that the guy is a talented photographer, but to me, this idea of taking masses of equipment along to photograph such fascinating culture and subject matter is really contrived. I don’t want to see a band promo, I want to see reality. I feel that something is lost when you take a studio along to these environments. Of course, something is definitely gained as well, but whatever it is, I don’t like it.
Anyway, Zeesh called me yesterday which was amazing because I haven’t seen him for almost two years. He’s impossible to get hold of and lives very much ‘off the grid’ with his partner and two children. He called to let me know he’s going to a cleansing centre in San Francisco with his family and should be back in a month. We talked, and decided that if he does come back then we’ll have to work together again. I am really thankful to possibly get the opportunity to work with such an amazing person and such rich photographic subject matter. If you haven’t been following me since I worked with Zeesh two years ago, then I really can’t stress enough how amazing and interesting his character and lifestyle are. I will be crossing my fingers tightly in the hope that he’ll let me document him and his family.
