ROB HORNSTRA
My flatmate put me onto Rob Hornstra in December when I was researching for some of my own work. I’ve been obsessing over it regularly since.
Rob does something called ‘slow journalism’ which involves spending an extended period of time photographing somewhere. When I say extended, a lot of photographers will spend a few weeks, maybe a few months making a single body of work. Rob aims to work in Russia for something like five years. He’s already been doing it for a long time and strongly believes that the only way to truly understand a place is to put this level of commitment into studying and photographing it. There’s no need for me to spend ages writing about him, there’s a documentary on Vice that’s only sixteen minutes long but gives an extremely through account of Rob’s work. SEE IT HERE. I’d strongly recommend watching, it’s informative and goes into depth about his process and practice.
The thing that impresses me most about Rob, is his book making. He takes self publishing to a new level. You’ll see if you watch the documentary. I bought a copy of one of his books, I think it cost me €45 and came with a whole load of extra bits and pieces. For a decent photobook that’s not too bad. Plus it’s signed, there’s no barcode and no publisher. You really feel like you’ve got an object someone has put a lot of time and effort into personally.
