I’m currently putting together the edit for a project I shot on ‘The Spirit Of Adventure’ cruise ship.
I was lucky enough to spend two weeks on what is essentially a Holiday for the older generation. The average passenger age was 65 according to statistics I looked at prior to the cruise but I was told on board that this time it was closer to 70. I went on board expecting to take a very Parr-esque approach to the work but I really couldn’t be that brutal to the subject matter in the end. I think there is a comical element to the work but for the most part it’s an unbiased view of the British Cruise but with a more adventurous and cultured cross section of over sixties. Whilst the company is a subsidiary of SAGA, it is techincally separate and advertises itself as a break from the typical cruise experience. Obviously as a 21 year old student amongst this kind of crowd, there was often something of the satirical about my observations but I truly felt an affection for the whole institution and I hope I can portray it warmly.
I’m hoping to make a cut down edit of the project available initially as a zine, then perhaps look at a book in future if I’m happy with it. But to be honest for me to make and sell multiple copies of a book I’d have to be pretty crazy about the work.
At the moment I am genuinely feeling very good about the photos. I’m having a lot of those moments where you do a great big internal grin at your computer because the scans keep looking exactly as you’d hoped.
For now here’s a small taster. For all you tech heads everything was shot on an RZ67 with Kodak film.
