I just got back from a month long tour with Canterbury which took us over to Ireland, all over the UK and then out to Germany and back through Belgium. We had some excellent adventures and the response the band got at the shows blew me away. I was even lucky enough to play an acoustic support slot for them in Belgium on the last night of tour. I haven’t played a show for years so it felt great to get up on stage again, thanks if you came and saw it. There were even a few of you singing along.

Anyway, there have been photos going up here on the Canterbury lifestyle blog but as soon as I can put together an edit I’ll have a big series up on my website. Obviously the set will be much more photographically orientated than what’s been released already and will also include the European dates. I’ll also be putting up a separate series I shot whilst travelling through Germany.

For now, here are a few photographs that caught my eye whilst trawling through the enormous amount I have to edit. I also have a fair amount of developing and scanning to do. Updates coming soon. Currahee!

Last year I photographed the Taylor SS12 lookbook with a group of awesome people. Designs and production by Becca Allen and Styling by Elle Sheriff. We shot on location at an awesome reservoir scouted a few days before. The weather was incredible and the models (both new faces from gingersnap) fantastic. One of those idyllic shoots that goes perfectly and everyone has a great time. Looking forward to working with the brand more in the future. Expect big things from them. A friend of mine who also happens to be an awesome photographer is trying to raise money for a major collaboration with a charity in Ethiopia, please help him out by reading the following and buying some prints. Ben makes genuinely meaningful and interesting work and the prints available are fantastic. I’m definitely picking some up. I’m sure he would be massively appreciative if you could reblog this also.

“On the 19th of March I will be off to Ethiopia for 2 months working on a collaboration with the charity Project Harar. Project Harar helps young people with serious facial disabilities including noma, tumours, animal attacks, cleft lip and cleft palate to access high quality medical care. This will be a huge trip, with Project Harar flying out some top professors and surgeons from Guys Hospital in London performing roughly 60 operations in a short space of time in difficult conditions.

I’ll be flying out early to help show the whole story. To put it briefly I’ll firstly be visiting some of the patients villages meeting and photographing them, and then traveling with them into Addis Ababa, documenting the surgery, and then traveling back with them in order to show the whole process. I’ll also be shooting some short films as part of the project, something I’m very excited about.

Whilst out there I’ll also be shooting some new personal projects.

I’m in the process of setting up a special Tumblr for the trip, where I’ll be keeping a visual diary posting stories and images as the trip progresses so be sure to follow (I’ll get a link on here before I leave).

Currently I’m helping get funding together for the trip, and as part of this I will be selling 10x8” signed prints from my Ghana project as well as two from my hunting series for £10 with all proceeds going towards the trip. I’m currently in between tour dates with Canterbury. We got back from Ireland yesterday and will be heading out for the UK leg in a couple of days, then Germany for the final shows. I’ve been using shooting some polaroids here and there, but I won’t have time to scan them for a while.

There will be an actual tour blog to follow, which is being run by a rather well known clothing brand. I’ll post that up when it’s ready if you’re interested in following all the photos from the tour.

Before I answer this, I’m going to explain something, please allow me to generalise a little.

It DOES matter what camera equipment you have, no matter how romantically people go on about the one you have with you is the best or any camera can take a good picture. Instagram is not a real camera and cheap digital point and shoots are mostly terrible. Photography is not a cheap hobby and it is always better to save up. You will notice most of the people telling you it doesn’t matter what camera you have own very expensive gear. If you want to cultivate a portfolio of snapshot photography then by all means look for a cheap 35mm point and shoot and go nuts. However if you want to learn photography in and out, and I mean lighting, colour management and post processing, then you’ll have to spend considerable time and money doing it.

HOWEVER, there is a balance, and you don’t need to break the bank, you just need to do your research. There is plenty available online. It is not about having the best gear, but you do need to consider what variety of gear you need and what will help you achieve your goals. People that go straight out and spend £1700 on a top of the range DSLR have not thought things through. If you’re loaded up with cash then buy whatever the hell you want, but it won’t give you much of an advantage. For less than £500 you can get a digital set up and I mean including a lens that will allow you to take industry standard photographs and beyond. More expensive gear will only help you when you know how to use it.

A Mamiya RZ67 Pro II (the best bit of gear I own and it cost me £500 with a lens, film is not that expensive either)

Mamiya 65mm f/4

Mamiya 110mm 2.8

A canon 5d Mk II

Canon 50mm 1.4

Canon 24-70mm 2.8

Bowens lighting

A few 35mm cameras I picked up for free or at less than £50.

I develop all of my film myself at university and scan it all on an epson v700, sometimes I use IMACON scanners at uni.

I would like to add that if I hadn’t won a photography magazine competition in 2010 I would have considerably cheaper stuff. I got lucky.

I did an interview! It was for the first issue of ‘No Cigar’ And I think it might be okay… I don’t want to jinx it, me and my big mouth don’t do very well at interviews. But I’m pretty sure in this one, I come across all right. That quote about photography not being all about aesthetics sounds less massively obvious if you read it in context.
